The problem

Over time, engines choke themselves.

Even with the best servicing, carbon builds up where it does the most damage. Combustion chambers, valves, fuel injectors, EGR valves and exhaust systems all clog over the miles. Power drops, fuel economy slips and emissions climb.

It isn't only wear and tear. The engine is slowly choking itself.

Modern city driving is making it worse 20mph zones are now widespread across UK towns and cities. Modern multi-speed gearboxes mean engines often run close to idle speed in these areas and rarely reach their proper operating temperature. The result is more incomplete combustion, faster carbon build-up, and more frequent DPF and EGR issues. Urban bus and coach fleets are particularly exposed.

The fix

A clean, not a strip-down.

Our hydrogen-based process clears that carbon out without removing a single component. It takes as little as an hour per vehicle, so downtime stays to a minimum.

  • Restores power and performance
  • Restores mpg by up to 15%
  • Removes carbon deposits
  • Reduces exhaust emissions
  • Prolongs component life
  • Lowers engine running temperatures
  • Works as early intervention before bigger build-ups
  • Helps pinpoint faults behind carbon build-up

Any combustion engine We specialise in coach, bus and truck, but the heavy-duty equipment cleans any combustion engine — cars, vans, plant, boats, agricultural machinery and more. Petrol or diesel, anything from the 1960s to today.
What this isn't

We'll tell you straight.

No manufacturer will tell you their engine carbons up, but it's a fact of how combustion engines work over time. Where there's a build-up or blockage, there's often an underlying fault behind it.

We clean and clear carbon build-ups. The process is also excellent at helping to identify underlying faults behind major carbon build-ups. We'll work with your engineers to help find those faults. Our experience has helped to pinpoint blocked DPFs, faulty EGR valves, coked-up injector tips, and many other issues.
Why it matters

Moving to zero emissions won't happen overnight, and combustion vehicles will be on the road for years yet. Keeping those engines running cleanly and efficiently is good for your running costs and good for the environment. That's the job we do.

"We recently had a hydrogen carbon cleaning treatment carried out by H2 Carbon Clean on one of our 2023 Neoplan Tourline coaches, which operates on our long-distance scheduled services. After putting the coach back into regular operation and monitoring its fuel consumption, we saw an improvement of approximately 3mpg compared with its previous average. With the high mileage our vehicles cover, even a modest improvement in fuel economy makes a real difference to our operating costs. The coach has also felt smoother to drive, and we're very pleased with the results we've seen. Based on our experience, we'd have no hesitation in recommending hydrogen carbon cleaning as part of a preventative maintenance programme."

Common questions

What fleet managers ask us.

Does it work on Euro 6 engines?

Yes. The process is compatible with all generations of diesel and petrol engine, including Euro 6. It's particularly effective on modern engines where DPF and EGR systems are prone to carbon-related issues.

How do you connect to the engine?

We feed hydrogen gas into the air intake while the engine is running at idle. Nothing is removed from the vehicle, and no mechanical work is carried out. The process runs for around an hour per vehicle.

Do you need power on site?

Yes, we need a standard 240V mains supply. We'll confirm this with you before booking. In most cases a depot or yard will have what's needed, and we can also discuss options if yours doesn't.

Does it affect the vehicle warranty?

No components are removed and nothing is introduced into the fuel system, so the process doesn't void manufacturer warranties. We'd always recommend confirming with your own fleet engineer if you have any specific concerns.

How often should we have it done?

For a working fleet, we suggest every 30,000–50,000 miles, or annually as a minimum. Vehicles operating in urban stop-start conditions — including bus and coach routes in 20mph zones — may benefit from more frequent cleans.

Can it help with a failing DPF or EGR valve?

In many cases, yes. A carbon clean can help restore partial function and extend the life of a DPF or EGR valve before replacement becomes necessary. We'll always give you an honest assessment of what to expect before we start.

Do you work on trucks and HGVs as well as buses and coaches?

Yes. We work across the full range of commercial vehicles — buses, coaches, trucks, HGVs, vans and more. Our equipment is heavy-duty and industrial grade, built for large engines and high-volume fleet work.

Does it work with retrofitted Euro VI systems?

Yes. The process works fine where older vehicles have had equipment retro-fitted to Euro VI standards for clean air zones. Where telematics are being correctly utilised, you'll also see improved results in the data.

Is the process finished once the H2 Carbon Clean cycle is completed?

No. At that point, carbon deposits have had hydrogen infused into them. The softened carbon will continue to break down over the days following the process, and in many cases the outcome continues to improve. We recommend a 30-minute drive at higher revs immediately after the machine cycle, to take advantage of the hydrogen being at its optimum.
